STATUS: Mid Production Phase

Only waiting for one final element to arrive. Been busy working on covers and Blu-ray menus. The Italian Audio we had was not good enough quality and a new track won't arrive from Europe in time, so Italian audio has been cut from the project. Two posters have arrived and are being processed for the covers.

MENU UPDATE: We are trying something brand new on this project... there will be two on disc methods of viewing chapters. One accessible while the film is playing and one from the main menu structure. The Advanced Chapters Menus, as we are calling them, will display the entirety of each chapter (at 24x speed)... enabling you to pinpoint exactly what scene you are looking for before selecting a chapter. Excited to see the feedback from the final product and if the Advanced Chapters Menus are a feature worth adding in future projects. This will be of interest to those who had any slow navigation no previous releases, as we have removed a LOT of the graphical requirements from the buttons and placed them into a video instead. This should make the whole experience a lot snappier and more responsive.

Seven from Texas (1964)

STATUS: Planning Phase

We are just getting the planning phase of this project finished. Our tentative release window will be in stores at the end of 2017 or early 2018 and we have an internal goal of shipping any pre-sale purchases (if we decide to do a pre-sale) in November (2017). We will be trying something slightly new and be posting an approximately weekly status update (might be every other week on particularly busy stretches)

What have we finished?

We have captured and balanced the colors of the 35mm print

We have done some minor digital restoration (a few trouble spots could not be fixed without losing footage, so we left untouched)

What remains to be done?

English Subtitles (about 20% finished)

Subtitle translation into Spanish

Subtitle translation into Italian

Find and analyze Italian audio track to determine if we can synchronize and add into release

Find and analyze Spanish audio track to determine if we can synchronize and add into release

Printed artwork design (cover, booklet, etc)

As you can tell by the above video, your experience may vary greatly with this disc based on what Blu-ray player you use.

Why is this happening on some players?

We have always wanted our menus to stand out, to be a part of the presentation of the product and not an afterthought. As such, we put forth a great deal of time designing them to be visually interesting and appropriate for the film (or films) on the disc. That said, this sluggish problem experienced by some Blu-ray players shows we went too far this time.
Each underline is unique and hand drawn for the buttons, no one button underline is the same. The background elements are all scanned, real life objects. We even went so far as to individually stylize each button's text so each letter is ever so slightly different from the others.
In short, we focused so much on the style and visual elements we neglected focus on the speed of navigation.
Sadly, all the graphics take a decent amount of processing power and a decently quick RAM bus to make a snappy experience while using the menus... and some Blu-ray players just don't have the power to display the graphics in a quick manner.

Is the disk broken?

No. Everyone we have talked to thus far have been able to play both films and play all trailers or each individually. All the subtitles are able to be controlled via the menu structure. All audio is controllable via the menu structure. Everything works, just on some players it works SLOW.

What is the plan?

Obviously moving forward we will be ditching our extravagant menu design on future Blu-ray discs for a simple, easy to load menu structure that focuses on speed.
What to do if your player is sluggish?
First, we apologize for our mis-step. We sympathize with the frustration this would cause. If you didn't know what was happening you might keep pressing the "Enter" button on your remote and enter a cycle of trying to display the sub-menu and then trying to hide the sub-menu. That would be aggravating and we apologize for this confusion that it has caused.
Second, if you decide that the printed artwork, the three films, and the trailers are not worth dealing with the aggravation of a slow-to-respond menu please get in touch with us. You can email us at production@doradofilms.com.
Third, if you want to help us to avoid problems in the future and help us provide a list of fully functional Blu-ray players, you could fill out this very short form:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfe5uH39u2AdG7-PAyhLk5WB2DMH3A2q_gRjZbuZY2d1gQfcg/viewform?usp=sf_link
We will use the results from the above form to find problematic Blu-ray players and try to acquire some of them for our internal testing process. This should help future products work on a wider range of blu-ray players.Micah Khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07859880662811261409noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2922843162331911531.post-56739888380875796422016-10-05T14:59:00.002-07:002016-10-05T14:59:18.683-07:00DoradoFilms.Video - Status and Updates for 2016/10It has been a very busy (roughly) 3 weeks! I thought I would talk about a few things we have discovered so far from our Pre-Sale website.

Shipping charges are a big deal to people. While this might seem to make sense, we were trying to be super transparent with our pricing and chose not to "mask" shipping fees inside of the product cost. We made the mistake of estimating a total weight of 9 ounces for the entire order shipped to the customer. We felt that was a safe estimate, not looking ahead of time at what the cost of shipping a 9 ounce package was through USPS for international. The cost difference was staggering, about 9 dollars on average more expensive than 8 ounces. We had to quickly get a bunch of samples together and try to choose the smallest weight we felt we could safely set for shipping. We took a lot of flack online for our "shipping charges"... we did not mind fixing them as we would have paid the shipping fee directly to USPS and would not have been able to pocket any of the extra 9 dollars anyway. Several assumed we were up to no good sadly, it took some PR work to build back some trust. Good lesson learned the hard way.

Individually numbered products create interesting problems. We have had to grope with the idea of "should we allow one user to order multiple products" in one fashion or another from the start of this project. We thought it fair if we allowed multiple orders but you had to order it one by one. However, we then came into the problem of shipping single boxes to the same address is more expensive (with box cost and shipping cost) than combining orders. Our internal discussions prior to the launch settled on the disbelief anyone would want to order more than one and it wasn't a priority to fix. We have since found out that is not the case and are in the process of having the shipping portion of the shopping experience re-coded.

Security is misunderstood. We made sure that our entire pre-sale site was encrypted by SSL and made the conscious decision to NOT process any credit card numbers ourselves. Braintree (https://www.braintreepayments.com/) was a perfect solution for our project, however there has been an interesting PR problem that has grown from using this gateway. People assume because of the way the process of checking out LOOKS that WE process credit cards. We have attempted to clarify how this works several times, however it has not changed the trepidation of several and some very outspoken critics of the Pre-Sale in general.

Braintree has interesting quirks. We have also discovered Braintree is an interesting solution that has some very specific quirks. It took a while for PayPal to be integrated (which is very interesting to me as Braintree is a division of PayPal) and PayPal's checkout process is very problematic. The shipping address has to perfectly match an address on file with PayPal, sometimes to the capitalization. Also, we just (hopefully) fixed a recurring challenge for some customers where the Region / State of the shipping address has to be a 2 digit abbreviation in order for the payment to be accepted. Several would write out the full state (like "Oregon", etc) and those orders would be refused by PayPal. We don't know how much lost sales this has resulted in, but we are confident it has been frustrating for many.

We have several more little lessons that we have been finding along the way, but I wanted to share just a few of the big ones today. Overall, we are pleased with the way DoradoFilms.Video has been operating thus far. We would have had to price these Blu-ray's at about 50 USD (not including shipping) if we had used a marketplace like Amazon, Ebay, etc. So, it is our hope that as we work through the little bugs and confusion our customers will continue to give us the patience and benefit of the doubt as we try to save everyone about 20 USD per Blu-ray.

Does High Crime deserve to be released on DVD or Blu-ray? Should we run a KickStarter campaign for the release? If you think this film does deserve a quality release, get involved and help get this film out!

We have a goal of 300 members for this project. Here is our plan:

Collect 300 email addresses to inform about the KickStarter project when it is posted.

While we are collecting those email addresses, get feedback on our ideas for the release and finalize funding goal.

Create a KickStarter campaign and attempt to get to 30% of our funding goal within the first 5 days via our Project Members!

We learned a lot from our first attempt at KickStarter. While we were definitely not happy about the results, and frankly very surprised, it was an overall good learning experience. To create a strong chance at success for this campaign, we are applying the following suggestions:

Pick a solid, achievable goal and explain to project members exactly how we plan on achieving the goal.

Incidentally, this is a sample of how we are planning on achieving our goal this time around. We are collecting enough email addresses to achieve the following scenario:

~24% of our goal: If 1/3rd of our Project Members (100 individuals) pledge at least for the DVD (10 USD from our 35mm theatrical print or 15 USD from the negative).

~8% of our goal: If 1/30th of our Project Members (10 individuals) pledge for the numbered, limited edition version of the DVD (or Blu-ray).

~1% of our goal: If the remaining Project Members pledge the 1 USD "online extras" option.

That will get us over 30% of the way there, which does four things for us... (1) it proves to KickStarter faithfuls that this is a legitimate project and encourages them to put money into it, (2) it gives us better exposure on KickStarter, (3) it gives us the motivation to push the campaign hard locally and via social media, and (4) statistically it is the tipping point for a crowd sourced project to succeed, 90% of projects that get over 30% will succeed.

We will explain this goal and our hopeful expectations of our Project Members in the email finalizing the project, and will encourage them to sign up for KickStarter if they haven't yet so they can help us get over the 30% hump. Even if the Project Members only pledge the funds until we get to about 40% and then remove their pledges it would help tremendously in achieving our goal of releasing this film in good quality.

Keep it SIMPLE. Last time we had WAY too many perks and levels of rewards.

Create a really high quality project video, not just Micah talking into the webcam.

Set specific release dates for DVD and Blu-ray if the project is funded.

Reach out to our growing sources to spread the campaign and work out a clever marketing campaign.

What we want to do is create a Blu-ray from the negative in Europe, that would be stunning and would do this film justice. But, we will see what everyone thinks and if we can get enough people joining the project to reach that goal.

Micah Khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07859880662811261409noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2922843162331911531.post-30268266516085217462013-04-15T22:44:00.004-07:002013-04-15T22:44:53.525-07:00New feature on DoradoFilms.com: ProjectsLink: http://doradofilms.com/projects/

We are hopeful that this new home for our projects will encourage better communication between us and fans of the films we have in our library. This is an AJAX application, which was created from scratch to make it as useful as possible.

There are 5 specific goals for this app:
(1) Collect email addresses for the project specific newsletters we will be creating.
(2) Encourage simple, anonymous feedback (using simple + or - buttons) for ideas and artwork we have.
(3) Receive feature ideas from project members, which can then be voted on by all members of the project.
(4) Answer questions from project members.
(5) Discuss the project with members (and let them discuss it with each other)

We think we have created a tool that accomplishes those goals, but we will obviously be tweaking it in the coming weeks and months. Consider this in BETA mode. We would definitely love feedback.

One interesting side note to this project: we had to re-add users to the site (which we have had disabled for years since we did not really have a need for them). We erased all the old users, so anyone that was once signed up needs to re-sign up.Micah Khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07859880662811261409noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2922843162331911531.post-15761438376685589422013-01-16T18:37:00.000-08:002013-01-16T18:37:12.744-08:00Dorado Films Screeners Project - DVD+Rs

We are rolling out DVD+Rs of the Screeners we released last year. A portion of the proceeds from these sales will go towards a higher quality release. Once we reach a specific milestone of income we will "graduate" the film to a proper commercial release.
Notes:

The DVD+Rs contain the same watermark you see on the YouTube videos so as to discourage illegal distribution.

The DVD+Rs are identical to what you see on YouTube except that they are "uncensored" (no content restrictions on DVD+Rs, unlike on YouTube)

We cannot accept returns for DVD+Rs, contact us if you receive a damaged DVD+R and we will let you know how to proceed to resolve that issue.

We will be releasing the rest of last year's Screeners onto DVD+R in the coming weeks. Shipping might be delayed a bit at first while we iron out all wrinkles in producing these cost effectively.

Shoot us an email, comment here, on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter if you have any questions. We will update this post with answers to common questions.

The very early version of this Idea

Credit the kind words and suggestions of Mr. O. Carter for pushing this idea into high drive. We appreciated his proactive suggestion and KickStarter was something we were curious about trying before he provided a bit of research that indicated it might succeed.

Ok, this idea depends on a few factors:

If KickStarter would allow us to setup a project for an Argoman DVD and / or Blu-ray release (seems like they would).

Enough people are interested in this film being done and having some extras.

Certain "extras" would be dependent on backer’s desires, people involved, cost, and time involvement.

Conditions laid out, this is an early concept we are working on. We love the response so far for the screeners project. We have heard the interest and now it's time to move on to the next phase... product fulfillment. Why did we pick Argoman over the trilogy of Napoli Violenta, Roma Violenta, and Italia a mano armata? Put simply, we wanted to test the waters with something we could best calculate price for and we could assemble in a shorter period of time. We also wanted to get Argoman out because we enjoy the film, have gotten to know Roger Browne and love the guy, and we think we could market this film successfully locally (Portland, OR) and abroad. We also guessed that 1 film will cost about ⅓ of a trilogy of films... makes sense right?

Goals

We are still putting prices together, but here are the three tiers of "goals" we would have:

DigiBeta (SD) to DVD from Negative in Europe - $25,000

DVDs cost a lot of money to produce. The industry has suffered a lot with the economy and you just can't get the same value from these releases as you once could. Add to that, we haven't had a very successful time doing our grass-roots style marketing to date. Here is the "catch", we could release this film for about $15,000 from our 35mm and do a decent job at it. So, why $25,000? One thing is we want to go from the Negative (highest quality). A DigiBeta is a professional, digital tape format that is SD (standard definition). Part of the fun with KickStarter is that we can add "Rewards" for different backers. This film is a goldmine for potential rewards. Skip down to the "rewards" below if you want to see why the price increased so. We could fluctuate this before we post the project if people are just not interested in some "rewards".

DigiBeta to DVD and a Screening with Roger Browne - $32,000

If we could reach this goal, we also will do a screening / mini-film festival with Roger Browne for this film. We are trying to add up costs to make sure what we allotted would be sufficient and whether to hold it here in Portland, OR. This screening would be on or around September 8th, 2012 or September 15th, 2012. Portland, Oregon (which is a veritable banquet of gorgeous natural parks and wilderness, the micro-brew capital of the United States, and living up to the self-provided motto “Keep Portland Weird”) will provide a fun setting for this screener.

HDCAM (HD) to Blu-ray and DVD from Negative and Screening - $40,000

HDCAM is professional, digital tape for HD (High Definition). It would make a pristine HD master so we could be able to produce a Blu-ray and DVD.

Over $40,000

If this project just takes off and we have more than our last goal, we would release other films and goodies and give to the backers. We would get creative and would love suggestions.

Rewards

Some of the extra cost is in order to produce a good mix of rewards for backers. Here they are, high to low. Some of these rewards cost quite a bit to print, manufacture, material costs, etc...

$6000 - OnDisk Advert 1 (60 seconds, plays right after DFI logo and before other potential ads, DVD menus)

Obviously content must be approved, but we hope to get some support from businesses and defray some cost by adding a few ads. If you know a company that would like to advertise on around 2,000 to 5,000 DVDs / Blu-rays and sponsor a screening, feel free to let them know! The other two potential adverts are also co-sponsors of the screening and would get some advertising from that as well (obviously if we reach our second or third goal)

$4000 - OnDisk Advert 2 (30 seconds, plays after Advert 1...)

$2000 - OnDisk Advert 3 (15 seconds, plays after Advert 2...)

$900 - Everything below AND Signed (by Roger Browne), Framed, Argoman Mask and Gloves replica.

This would be limited to 10, numbered with a signed certificate. We are allocating a decent amount of money for these. Which means if no one is interested in this, we would not do this and our goals would drop by a goodly amount.

$300 - Everything below AND a copy of an original dialog script

This is in Italian, we received this from the producer [Fida] when we licensed the film..

$200 - Everything below AND a Press book

$150 - Everything below AND a Poster

$120 - Everything below AND a signed frame still (by Roger Browne)

$80 - Everything below AND a Day bill

If we reach our 40,000 goal, this would include a Blu-ray AND a DVD

$40 - Everything below AND stickers (possibly fan created, but definitely will be fun... we want input on what these would look like)

At this level, if we get our 40,000 goal, you could trade the DVD for a Blu-ray.

$25 - DVD

Add an extra $5 dollars for shipping internationally please!

Introducing the Dorado Films Screeners project

A different movie each week, free on YouTube (advertisements utilized to support cost of project). For more information check out http://www.doradofilms.com/screeners/.

This week on Dorado Films Screeners: The Fuller Report

Dick Worth [Ken Clark] is an American race car driver. His success on the track earns him (or punishes him) with a trip to Stockholm for an exhibition race as his employer seeks to lure European capitalists. Dick just wants to find a girl with whom he can enjoy some of his free time. His choice turns into a poor one. He is dragged into an international conspiracy. Dick is just a regular guy on a working holiday and now a few government agencies are either trying to kill him or use him to achieve their agenda. His love of country and his increasing affection for the innocent Svetlana [Beba Loncar] keep him in harms way as he attempts to learn the truth of the Fuller Report.

Directed by Sergio Grieco. Starring Ken Clark and Beba Loncar.Micah Khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07859880662811261409noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2922843162331911531.post-91270779696448804512010-12-02T00:03:00.001-08:002010-12-02T00:12:07.528-08:00Electra OneWe still have some box sets of How Europe Does BABES, BOMBS, and GUNS, so it looks like it will be a while more before we release our excess stock of Electra One by itself.
Internally, we have been having some discussions about pricing for this release. We threw it into the box set just to round out the set to 4 films, but we hadn't really thought of it as a stand-alone release. One reason is because we took it from our master 1" tape. 1" tapes can be ok quality, but it is not on par with our other releases.

For those of you who bought the box set, now that you have seen the film and the quality it is presented in from the 1" tape, what is the price you would buy the movie for?
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2922843162331911531.post-71844822667894461992010-10-27T16:55:00.000-07:002010-10-27T20:32:53.368-07:00Wanted: The Fantastic Argoman footage
Roger Browne plays one interesting super-...uh...hero? in The Fantastic Argoman. He seems equally selfish and altruistic. You could expect him to save the world from complete destruction, and at the same time you could see him walking right into a bank and grabbing a handful of cash. It is a fun, interesting, and enjoyable film. It truly is something you have to experience for yourself to appreciate. Any movie this good deserves to be released on DVD and available to the masses. We wanted to talk about The Fantastic Argoman for a little bit today. Talk about where the project is, where it is heading, and what could be done to speed it along.

Why the delay?

The largest obstacle we have right now to releasing this film is about 4 minutes long. Check out the clip to the right. We are missing the entire 4 minute introduction of the film before the credit roll! This shows what type of a "hero" Argoman is and it introduces you to some of his powers. It is a good hook for the film and pretty important. WHY the labs in Europe don't have this scene is beyond our understanding. Either we are getting toyed with or this is a devastating loss of footage you could have for a film like this. This scene is directly referred to right after the credits, so it seems bizarre to claim that it was not meant to be included in the film. Frustrating? Yes. Giving up? No! Our "worse-case" scenario is to use the cruddy copy of the introduction we have with a disclaimer. We could also have fun with it and make it look like a vintage "newsreel" clip and put it in the main menu.

Not how we want all the work of dredging through European film labs to end, but we DO want to release this film at some point. Feel free to sound off in the comments as to what you would do in our position.

Where does the project sit now?

The project has been in "stasis" while we have hunted down the footage. We have done a little bit of work on the front cover. We did a copyshot (which means we took a picture of a poster with a DSLR) and we cleaned up all creases, rips, bends, etc in the image. It came out great, as you can see. We need to modify it a bit for the final cover, but it is a great beginning.

We bartered for some very high quality stills and posters with a great guy from France. We are in great shape to make menus, the rest of the cover, and the rest of the artwork to get this film off it's feet in no time. When we are moving full steam again on this project, it should be a matter of days or weeks... not months. Thank you all for your patience!

Can we help with anything?

If you can hunt down the footage for the introduction, that would be the largest contribution one could make to this project. Maybe you have some ideas of how to utilize the footage we already have to make the final product work seamlessly? Feel free to drop us a line for suggestions and comment on the blog... we want this film out there as much as you do!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2922843162331911531.post-87785062289771311162010-10-20T14:06:00.001-07:002010-10-20T14:38:36.799-07:00How Europe Does BABES, BOMBS, and GUNS

We recently finished our long-overdue update to the http://www.DoradoFilms.com website.
